"The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderser. Hans Christian Andersen was a storyteller who was born in Denmark in 1805 and died there in 1875. People all over the world know his fairy tales, which include "The Snow Queen," "The Ugly Duckling," "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Princess and the Pea" and, of course, "The Little Mermaid." Here is Andersen's tale of the little mermaid who exchanges her beautiful voice for a human form. That way she can be near the prince whom she has rescued from a shipwreck and with whom she has fallen in love. Although the mermaid and her prince don't live happily ever after, as many other fairy-tale characters do, the mermaid does achieve eternal happiness bacause of her good deeds and loving ways." "Narrated by Richard Chamberlain. Music by Ron Goodwin." "The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde. The British author Oscar Wilde, who lived from 1854 to 1900, is best known today for his novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and his plays. But he also wrote two books of fairy tales, the first one, called The Happy Prince and Other Tales, in 1888. Here is the title fable of that book, the story of a swallow who, while flying over a northern European city on his way south to avoide the cruel winter, alights to rest on a statue of The Happy Prince. The bird sees that the prince is anything but happy. In fact, he's crying, weeping for the poor people in his city. The statue insists that the little swallow strip away the gold and precious stones that adorn him and use them to help the needy. The swallow does this, but then dies of the cold. The prince, now just an ugly lead figure, is melted down...but his heart will not melt. In the end, we find that the swallow and the prince's heart are the most precious things in the entire city." "Narrated by Christopher Plummer and Glynis Johns. Music by Ron Goodwin." "Copyright 1985 The Reader's Digest Association, Inc. Reader's Digest Presents. Children's Classic." [from case]
